Production Process Of Copper Foam

Pure copper powder is compacted with carbonate powder. It is then sintered, which causes the copper powder particles to bond to each other without melting. This forms a matrix of copper ligaments, with the carbonate powder sandwiched in between. After cooling, the carbonate is either dissolved in water and recycled or thermally decomposed.

The carbonate is chosen to have a decomposition temperature higher than the melting point of copper, and it can be any of a number of readily available carbonates such as calcium, magnesium, potassium, or sodium carbonate. The melting point, particle size, and solubility in liquids all influence the precise choice of carbonate.
1. Copper and carbonate particles are combined
2. The mixture is shaped by compacting it.
3. The mixture is heated to approximately 1000°C, which causes the copper to bond.
4. The carbonate particles decompose or dissolve thermally. The product is then completed and sent to Quality Control.
