Metal foams have wide applications in filtration and separation materials. The main applications are as follows:

Air Filtration: Researchers have developed metal foams with micropores. These foams are more robust and resistant to deformation, solvents, and high temperatures and pressures. For example, copper foam maintains its shape under pressure and high wind speeds, making it suitable for reusable face masks or air filters. It has high filtration efficiency, exhibiting excellent filtration efficiency for particles in the 0.1-1.6µm size range, capturing 97% of 0.1-0.4µm atomized salt particles.2

Exhaust Gas Filtration: Metal foam-supported catalysts have advantages such as rapid ignition, small size, high strength, and good heat resistance, and are used in motorcycle exhaust purification. The three-dimensional porous structure of metal foam results in a larger internal surface area per unit volume, better filtration effect, and superior shock resistance compared to foam ceramics. Therefore, it has been applied in the automotive exhaust treatment industry abroad, and major Chinese automobile and motorcycle manufacturers also plan to use metal foam.3

Liquid Filtration: Nickel foam can be used as a filter material and a magnetofluidic conductor for treating magnetic particles in fluids. Its filtration accuracy can be achieved to 3-50µm through relevant processes. Taking water as an example, the throughput for each PPI can reach 95-98%. Higher PPI values will result in greater fluid resistance, but the throughput for different liquids will not be less than 80%1.

Other applications: Porous foam metal materials can also be used in chemical, metallurgical, electrochemical, and military industries, such as catalyst carriers, oil and gas sand separators, sound absorption, noise reduction, heat insulation, heat dissipation, oil-water separation filtration, and pipeline filter screens. In summary, foam metals, with their unique physicochemical properties, have shown great application potential in the field of filtration and separation materials.
