Metal Foam Structural Features
Mar 08, 2022
Metal foams can be divided into closed-cell and through-cell metal foams in terms of structure. The former contains a large number of independent pores, while the latter is a continuous three-dimensional porous structure. Its structural characterization parameters mainly include porosity, pore size, through-hole Specific gravity and specific surface area, etc. Generally speaking, porous metal foam materials have the following structural characteristics:
(1) Light weight and small specific gravity: Foam metal is a mixture of metal and gas, and its specific gravity is only 1/50 to 3/5 of the same volume of metal;
(2) High porosity: the porosity of general porous metal foams is 40% to 90%, while the porosity of sponge-like metal foam materials can be as high as 98%;
(3) Large specific surface area: the specific surface area of foam metal can reach 10-40 cm2/cm3;
(4) The pore size range is large: through process control, the pore size that can be obtained is between microns and centimeters.
