Applications for nickel foam air filters include heterogeneous catalysts for automotive catalytic converters and catalytic combustion, as well as catalytic filters for diesel engine particulates. Because of its unique open crystalline structure, low pressure drop, intrinsic strength, and thermal shock resistance. Its high thermal conductivity may outperform ceramic monolith supported catalysts in the low light-off transformation of combustion products and hydrocarbons during cold engine start.
As a catalyst support, Ni foam may be as good as or better than high-temperature steels. Other applications for nickel metal foam catalysts include foam assisted Fischer-Tropsch catalysts, steam reforming, and fine chemical hydrogenation.
