Metal powder or metal chips are heated above the melting point of the metal with titanium dihydride or other propellants. This causes the mixture to foam due to the release of gaseous hydrogen.
After blowing gas into molten metal, the porous structure remains.
The main challenges in producing metal foams are finding the right combination of metal and blowing agent and heating them to the correct temperature in the right amount of time. This is the only way to get the desired outcome. The control of pore proportions, pore size, and pore distribution is practically unpredictable.
Porous cast metal is a valuable alternative due to its simple manufacturing technology. The wide range of precisely defined pore sizes from 0.2 mm to 4.0 mm allows for the production of the optimum porosity for the desired application. The inseparable connection of porous and non-porous parts simplifies a wide range of applications.
